       Our Senior Instructors Come From The Parker/Planas Lineage

Mr. Abernathy began his martial arts training in Judo at the YMCA in 1960 as a young boy at the age of 9.  This was short lived and lasted for only 6 months before his instructor moved.  Mr. Abernathy wasn't able to find any other martial arts instruction until 1970 when he went off to college.  He began training in Tae Kwon Do at the J. Pat Burleson Karate Studio in Stephenville, Texas under the instruction of Thaine McVean.

From that point on, Mr. Abernathy has been involved in the martial arts.  Here are some of the highlights in his Martial Arts education: 

* February 24, 1974 - Promoted to 3rd Brown Belt  in Tae Kwon Do 
Chung Duk Kwon under J. Pat Burleson, Thaine and Russell McVean.
*February 6, 1977 - Promoted to Red Belt in Tae Kwon Do Moo Duk Kwon
under Hee Deok "Eagle" Park.
*May 10, 1978 - Promoted to 1st Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do Moo Duk Kwon under Hee Deok "Eagle" Park in Midland, Texas.
*September 1979 - Began teaching Tae Kwon Do at YMCA in Midland.
*November 1983 - Began studying Ed Parker's American Kenpo with Dan Truex and David Ceniceros.
*January 26, 1986 - Met SGM Edmund K. Parker for the first time in Irving, Texas at seminar given by Rick Fowler
*September 9, 1986 - Promoted to 1st Black Belt in American Kenpo under Dan Truex and David Ceniceros.
*April 1994 - Opened AMERICAN kenpo KARATE in San Antonio, Texas at the present location.
*July 25, 1998 - Promoted to 2nd Black Belt in American Kenpo under 10th Degree Richard "Huk" Planas.
*February 28, 2004 - Promoted to 3rd Black Belt in American Kenpo under 10th Degree Richard "Huk" Planas.
